This maiolica vase was made in the late 17th or early 18th century at Castelli in Italy, probably in the workshop of Carlo Antonio Grue (1655-1723).

The globular vase is painted in polychrome with Poseidon and attendant nereids. Poseidon, seated on drapery, watches over his shoulder two naked nereids playing in the water. Two other nereids, with billowing drapes, stand before him offering foam.

Carlo Antonio Grue was the son of Francesco Grue who was the leading painter at Castelli at this time.
