Alabaster jar

This small alabaster jar is among the grave goods from the grave of a 17th Dynasty queen and her child at Qurneh in Egypt. It was found inside the queen's coffin, resting on the end of a headrest.

The jar is made from a single block of alabaster, with a bulbous belly, constricted neck and flaring rim. It has a flat lid. There are remains of woven fabric attached to the lid and the upper part of the jar, to stop the contents from spilling out.

This grave, from the burial place of the kings and queens of Thebes, is remarkable as it dates from a time when Egypt was politically divided and relatively poor. The queen and her child have been lavishly equipped for the Afterlife.
