Wooden stool frame, from royal burial

This stool frame is among the grave goods from the grave of a 17th Dynasty queen and her child at Qurneh in Egypt. It was found with a second stool frame outside the queen's coffin.

The frame comprises four wooden struts and four legs, joined with mortice and tenon joints. The seat had been made of twisted rush, whose strands left wear-marks along the struts. The legs are chipped. Its worn condition indicate it was old when buried.

This grave, from the burial place of the kings and queens of Thebes, is remarkable as it dates from a time when Egypt was politically divided and relatively poor. The queen and her child have been lavishly equipped for the Afterlife.
