Basket (reconstruction)
Add to album

This basket was made from willow using traditional methods and techniques such as early people in Scotland might have used. Although no baskets survive, such baskets would have been essential for the hunter-gatherer-fisher population who moved throughout the countryside.

The basket was woven from willow. It has a leather strap, made from a deer hide, to enable it to be carried over the shoulder. The basket holds a deer hide.

The earliest settlers in Scotland moved around the countryside, transporting many of their belongings with them, presumably in baskets such as this one. They also used baskets when for carrying food when gathering or fishing.
