Axe (reconstruction)
Add to album

This is a reconstruction of an axe of the type early people would have used.

The reconstruction was based on an axe made and used around 6,000 years ago. Most unusually, the wooden haft as well as the stone blade was preserved, providing valuable evidence of the way the two attached. The axehead is made of stone, carefully shaped, polished and sharpened.

Modern attempts to duplicate the skills and objects of early people have led to increased understanding - and respect - for their methods. Such reconstructions also help archaeologists interpret the discovered remains.
