Photograph (2 of 3), of making an arrow

This photograph shows one of the stages in making an arrow. Here the finished arrowhead is shown.

Making arrowheads from suitable stone was a skilled task. First a suitable flake needed to be struck from a core. Then the flake was carefully retouched using tools such as the antler hammer.

Modern attempts to duplicate the skills and objects of early people have led to increased understanding - and respect - for their methods. Such reconstructions also help archaeologists interpret the discovered remains.
