These three wooden boxes, one for cards, one for pills and one for jewellery, were made by the artist Peter Roy in 1982. The intent was to make functionally useful boxes in exotic woods, with decorative banding formed by different types of wood.

The card box and jewel box are made of rosewood, while the pill box is made of blackwood. All three have banding on the joins of the lids and bodies in white holly, yellow opepe and red rengas woods, producing a multicolour effect. The jewel box also has banding on the top of the lid.

During the 1980s the Scottish Development Agency purchased a number of hand-crafted items for its Scottish Crafts Collection. The aim of the collection was to inform the public of craft production in Scotland through touring exhibitions and education programmes. When the Scottish Craft Council was wound up, the collection was transferred to the National Museums of Scotland.
