Panel, entitled Old Linen, by Jennifer Hex

This linen and silk panel entitled 'Old Linen' was made by the artist Jennifer Hex in 1982. It was inspired by the sea glinting through mist on a sunny day.

The nearly rectangular panel is made of natural linen fringed at the top and bottom, with a smooth area to the outside. The central area is creased and puckered, decorated with zigzags of cotton thread and very small pieces of white silk folded into triangles.

During the 1980s the Scottish Development Agency purchased a number of hand-crafted items for its Scottish Crafts Collection. The aim of the collection was to inform the public of craft production in Scotland through touring exhibitions and education programmes. When the Scottish Craft Council was wound up, the collection was transferred to the National Museums of Scotland.
