Engraving, entitled Doors by Alison Kinnaird

This engraving of crystal mounted on a crystal base was made by the Scottish artist Alison Kinnaird in 1980. It is entitled 'Doors'. The engraving formed part of the Scottish Crafts Collection, which was transferred to the National Museums of Scotland when the Scottish Craft Council was wound up.

The upper block of crystal was engraved with a copper wheel in a design featuring a man and birds. It explores the reflections caused by turning the block, where the images appear to be trapped within it.

Alison Kinnaird is both a well-known traditional Scottish harpist and an artist. She works with glass, creating sculptures which explore the transparency, reflection, and distortion of the medium. She has exhibited widely, and her works are housed in collections throughout the world.
