Panel, depicting Siva
Add to album

This white marble panel depicting the Hindu god Shiva and his consort Parvati comes from Rajasthan in Western India. It dates to the 11th century.

Carved in high relief, the panel depicts Shiva seated holding his consort Parvati on his knee. The group is known as 'Umamaheshvara', meaning the Great Lord and Uma (Parvati). Here Shiva and his consort symbolise the idea of human, physical love. Parvati holds a mirror to reflect not her own divine beauty, but that of her Lord. Shiva holds his most typical attribute, the trident. He is seated on his vehicle, the bull Nandi.
