Carving, of Indra

This volcanic tuff carving of Indra mounted on his elephant comes from Java, Indonesia and dates to the 11th or 12th century.

Indra is the God of the Atmosphere and Thunder. He is usually depicted riding an elephant, an old symbol of Indian origin for the swollen raincloud. In his right hand he holds a thunderbolt.
