Frieze

This section of red sandstone coping frieze, was carved in the Kushan period, about the 2nd and 3rd century AD. It comes from Matthura in Uttar Pradesh in India.

The red sandstone is mottled with cream spots and carved with two horizontal registers in relief. The top register depicts a band of Yakshas - spirits of fertility - supporting an undulating garland of vines on their shoulders. The lower register depicts Prince Siddhartha (the future Buddha) and Yasodhara, is wife, seated beside a walled enclosure containing palm trees. Both are dressed in the robes and ornaments of Indian royalty. Prince Siddhartha renounced his family when he embarked on his search for spiritual enlightenment.
