Figure, of Vishnu

This four-armed figure of the Hindu god Vishnu carved in dark grey stone was discovered in the Bogra District of Pakistan, and dates to the late 11th or early 12th century. It was executed in Bengal in Eastern India during the Pala/Sena period.

Carved in dark grey stone, the four-armed figure (the lower left arm is broken off) is standing, against an open background, and wears a crown and necklaces. At each sideis an attendant female figure. These are two of Vishnu's consorts: Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Abundance, and Sarasvati - holding a vina - the Goddess of Intellect, the Arts and Music. The background, which rises to a peak, is carved in relief with flying angels, heavenly musicians and monsters.
