Helmet

This Persian spiked helmet (kulah) dates to the 17th or 18th century.

The helmet has a spike, plume holders, an adjustable nose-guard and fine chain-mail protecting the neck. It is richly damascened in gold with an arabesque pattern.

When in use the helmet was often wrapped with a coloured cloth and decorated with feathered plumes. The inscriptions identified the wearer as a defender of the Muslim faith and were also meant to protect in battle and ward off misfortune.
