This shale sculpture is of Padmapani (Avalokitesvara) and was made in eastern India around 1200.

Padmapani means 'The One who holds a Lotus' and refers to one of the senior characters in Buddhist belief who have held back from attaining the full buddhahood in their quest for Nirvana (Bodhisatva), to help and instruct mankind.

Padmapani is generally seen as a manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, the most important of later Buddhist bodhisatvas.
