Photograph, of baskets

This photograph is of a selection of oat-straw baskets of varying sizes, made in 1999.

The baskets are made of oat-straw which is platted, coiled and then sewn together to form the basket.

In the Northern Isles of Orkney and Shetland handmade baskets were essential to the crofting way of life. They were used for everything from gathering produce to holding the fishing catch or peat for fuel.
