Photograph, of Hamish Moore testing a set of lowland small pipes

This photograph shows Hamish Moore testing a set of lowland pipes in his workshop at Dunkeld, Perthshire in 2000.

The photograph shows Hamish Moore playing a set of lowland small pipes he has recently finished constructing. The bellow is tucked under his arm, while his fingers are placed on the chanter.

The small pipes have existed in Scotland in various forms (both mouth- and bellows- blown) over the centuries, but all suffered a fall into near or complete extinction. A revival took place in the early 1980s when the celebrated Northumbrian pipe-maker, Colin Ross, designed a Scottish cylindrically-bored open-ended chanter to fit the highly developed, sophisticated Northumbrian chanter reed. As a result the small pipes have become a very popular instrument throughout Scotland.
