Snuff box, owned by Major General Sir Archibald Campbell of Inverneill

This snuff box belonged to Major General Sir Archibald Campbell of Inverneill. It dates from around 1785. The box has gold mounts and a mother-of-pearl base.

Campbell's coat of arms appears on the lid of the box, along with symbols of the Order of the Bath of which he was a knight. Campbell had served in both regiments of Fraser's Highlanders (78th and 71st) and was wounded at Quebec in 1759.

Campbell was the first Colonel of the 74th (Highland) Regiment, raised in 1787 for service in India. At this time, Campbell influence in Scotland had grown as a result of their consistent political and military support for the British state.
