Plaque, commemorating George IV's visit to Scotland, 1822
Add to album

This earthenware plaque, produced to commemorate George IV's visit to Scotland in 1822, was possibly made by Rathbone's Pottery at Portobello in Midlothian. It is moulded with a full face bust of the king in relief.

The base of the bust is inscribed, 'WELCOME, KING GEORGE IV'.

King George IV's visit was stage-managed by the author, Sir Walter Scott. King George was the first reigning monarch since Charles II to come to Scotland. The visit was enormously popular and generated a great many souvenirs.
