Figure, of cat

This glazed and painted figure of a cat was possibly made at one of the Scottish East Coast potteries. It dates from the 19th century.

Glazed and painted earthenware figure of a cat with blue and yellow mottled body on a cream-coloured ground, made at Prestonpans, c. 1800

From 1750 onwards, large-scale potteries were established on the south side of the Firth of Forth, at Prestonpans, Prestongrange, West Pans, Musselburgh and Portobello. Much of the skilled workforce came from the older established Staffordshire potteries and consequently much of the pottery was similar to contemporary Staffordshire ware.
