Dish, with bust of Queen Caroline

This earthenware dish was made at one of the Scottish East Coast potteries around 1822. It is decorated with a bas-relief polychrome profile of Queen Caroline. It was probably produced to support Queen Caroline at the time of her acrimonious divorce from King George IV in 1820.

The border pattern includes relief-moulded crowns and Prince of Wales' feathers.

In 1795, Caroline of Brunswick married George IV while he was still Prince Regent. On the death of his father in 1820, George became king, but while Caroline was referred to as Queen, her position as such was never recognised because of her divorce from George. She died in 1821.
