This porcelain coffee cup and saucer were possibly made at the Verreville Pottery in Glasgow. They date from around 1840.
The fluted sides of the cup and saucer are painted with flower sprays in natural colours and gold.
By the middle of the 19th century the Clyde basin was undoubtedly the heartland of the Scottish pottery industry with several of the biggest firms such as J & M P Bell and Robert Cochran's Verreville and Britannia potteries. The Glasgow potteries produced a wide range of wares from high quality porcelain to transfer printed earthenware. As with other Scottish areas, however, the economic crisis of the inter-war years destroyed virtually every Glasgow pottery.
