Cake stand

This glazed earthenware cake stand, also known as a 'comport', was made at Belfield's Pottery in Prestonpans in East Lothian. The dessert service of this design was registered in 1876.

Green and brown rectangular footed dish or comport, by the Prestonpans Pottery

Belfield's Pottery was established by Charles Belfield in the mid-1830s. By the mid-19th century the pottery was employing between 20 and 40 people. The business remained a family concern and continued until the mid-20th century. Belfield's is best known for high quality earthenware, particularly its Rockingham teapots and coffee pots, maiolica ware and everyday kitchen ware.
