Add to album

This embroidered wool hanging was made by the Scottish artist Hannah Frew Paterson in 1978. It is entitled 'Caution - roundabouts ahead'. It formed part of the Scottish Crafts Collection, which was transferred to the National Museums of Scotland when the Scottish Craft Council was wound up.

The upper part of the hanging has an embroidered canvas triangle in a chevron design edged with green leather, hung from a black and white ring. The lower part of the hanging is a square with rounded corners containing nine circles. It is made of polythene tubing covered with linen, bound with football laces and linked with wooden curtain rings covered with laces or thread.

Hannah Frew Paterson was born in 1931 in Chapelton, Scotland, and now lives and works in Glasgow. Her textile designs are inspired by natural elements and landscape, executed using three dimensional methods. She has made a number of church embroidery commissions, as well as other private commissions.
