Hammer, presented to Petty Officer-Blacksmith James Sutherland, Royal Navy

This hammer was presented in 1863 to Petty Officer-Blacksmith James Sutherland of the Royal Navy by Commodore Lord John Hay. It has an ebony handle and a silver head.

Sutherland had served under Hay's command for four years on board HMS Odin. The inscription on the hammer describes him as 'a first rate blacksmith, a good petty officer and in all respects a trustworthy man'.
