Helmet, of officer of East Lothian Yeomanry Cavalry
Add to album

This helmet of an officer of the East Lothian Yeomanry Cavalry dates from around 1877.

The regiment's Colonel, the Earl of Haddington, had family connections with the Household Cavalry and, because of this, his regiment adopted details of the uniform in imitation of the Household Cavalry, the result being one of costly magnificence.

The desire to create a striking impression often took priority over more practical considerations in the design of military dress and equipment. With their spectacular appearance, the wearers represented the military power of the state.
