Trophy (detail), of Scottish Volunteer Ambulance

This is a detail of a Scottish Volunteer Ambulance silver trophy. The trophy was awarded annually to the winners of the Scottish Volunteer Ambulance competition between 1904 and 1907.

The top of the trophy is formed by a representation of the human heart complete with four ventricles.

Volunteer military ambulance units were formed in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, recruited from medical students at the universities. Stretcher-bearer companies were also organised.
