Dish, presented to Skipper Frank Deighton, Clyde River Patrol

This silver dish was presented to Skipper Frank Deighton in 1944 by the crew of the motor launch Tarka of the Clyde River Patrol. The dish was made in Glasgow by R. and W. Sorley.

The presentation inscription records the gift to 'Skipper Frank R. Deighton, H.M.M.L. Tarka, by his crew, Clyde River Patrol 1939-44'. Also inscribed are the signatures of the crew.

The Clyde River Patrol operated in shifts, searching the Clyde for mines. Its 14 launches were manned by volunteers from the Northern Yacht Club, under the command of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. This was important work, as the Clyde was a vital route for Atlantic convoys. The Patrol reported the position of mines dropped into the Clyde's dredged channel. These were then cleared by Royal Navy minesweepers.
