Drawing, of Lance Corporal Robertson, Edinburgh Home Guard

This pastel portrait of Lance Corporal Robertson of the 11th City of Edinburgh Battalion Home Guard was drawn by Eric Kennington. It dates from 1943. It is signed and dated 'EHK 43'.

Rather against the popular view, the picture stresses the dignity of the individual Home Guard soldier, Britain's last line of defence in the event of invasion.

The portrait is one of a series drawn by Eric Kennington for a book published in 1945 to commemorate the service and character of the Home Guard. Individuals from around the country are shown against backdrops reflecting their national or local character - in this example the national flag of Scotland.
