Recruiting poster, for Dundee Territorial Force

This recruitment poster seeks volunteers for units of the Territorial Force based in Dundee. It dates from around 1910. The new Territorial Force was expected to defend Britain while the regular army was fighting overseas. The new Force therefore required the full range of support units of a modern army, as advertised here.

The poster appeals for 'SMART YOUNG MEN OF THE CITY OF DUNDEE' who are between 17 and 35 years old, five feet two inches or more in height, and have a chest measurement of 32 inches or more. It reassures recruits that they could not be made to serve overseas against their will. Many of the men who joined the Territorial Force in Dundee at this time would later volunteer to go to the Western Front in 1914. The poster ends with the words 'GOD SAVE THE KING'.
