Soup plate

This red transfer-printed earthenware soup plate was exported to South East Asia, by the Glasgow potters, J. & M.P. Bell & Co. Ltd. The pattern is called 'KEELUNG' and the plate dates from between 1881 and the 1920s.

The centre shows a three-legged vase containing large flowers, surrounded by a palm tree, bushes and a butterfly. The border has a running scroll pattern with beading on the inner edge.

Bells were exporting pottery in large quantities during the second half of the 19th century. They developed a range of designs specially geared to the Eastern market based on oriental motifs and subjects. The designs were often named using the local language.
