Music cover, for piece of music composed in honour of victory at Alexandria

This cover is for a piece of music composed in honour of the British victory at Alexandria, 21st March 1801. A highland feather bonnet, a basket-hilted sword and a thistle all stress the Highland contribution to the victory, which removed the French threat to British India.

Music cover, The Battle of Alexandria, 1801, a characteristic piece, etc., by H.R. Bishop

The British were led at Alexandria by General Sir Ralph Abercromby (1734-1801), who was mortally wounded in the fighting. He became a national hero and mourning for his death is represented on the cover by the funerary urn on a pillar inscribed with his name, and by the willow tree, a symbol of mourning.
