Medal (reverse), commemorating 21st Anniversary of Volunteer Movement, 1881

This is the reverse of a bronze medal designed by the Scottish artist Sir Joseph Noel Paton to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the volunteer movement in 1881. Paton had commanded a battery of the 1st Edinburgh City Artillery Volunteers in 1860. The dies for the medal were engraved by Neil Macphail.

The reverse shows the Archangel Michael. It is inscribed 'PRO ARIS ET FOCIS' ('for our altars and our hearths') and signed 'NOEL PATON INV. NEIL MACPHAIL SC.'

The artillery battery was formed mainly of artists and included the painter John Faed as its first lieutenant.
