Coat & skirt

This woman's matching navy blue corded silk coat and skirt were designed by Norman Hartnell of London. They date from the mid 1950s.

The coat is cut in shaped panels with no waist seam, known as the 'princess line'. The skirts are heavily interlined to keep the flared shape. The separate skirt is straight and tight fitting and would only have shown when the wearer sat down.

This outfit would have been suitable for cocktail parties, weddings, theatre visits or days at the races. The full skirt, narrow waist and tight sleeves are legacies of the 'New Look' of Christian Dior which was introduced in 1947.
