Evening dressThis woman's black rayon evening dress was made in Britain between 1947 and 1949. The dress has a label marked 'II0II' which is so far unexplained but according to the donor indicates a non-utility garment from 1941-49. Such labels usually appear on clothes which were far more expensive. The post-World War II period experienced a similar desire for the return to the pre-war world that had affected the early 1920s. In fashion, the rationing of cloth and ready-made clothes in Britain and many other European countries meant that the true influences of design were not able to operate.
