Reproduction lamp

This reproduction bronze lamp with figures of Cupid and a dolphin was acquired from Pasquale Scognamiglio in 1871. The original was excavated at Pompeii and is now in the National Museum of Naples.

Reproduction in bronze of a Roman lamp with figures of Cupid and dolphin, from an original found at Pompeii

Neapolitan foundries produced tens of thousands of copper alloy reproductions of items excavated at Pompeii and Herculaneum. Souvenirs were an integral part of the luxury goods industry in Italy in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Their manufacture and sale employed large numbers of Italians and contributed to the general prosperity of all the major cities.
