Souvenir plaques

These three souvenir plaques show photographic views of Saltcoats on the Ayrshire coast. They date from the late 19th or early 20th century.

The top two plaques are identical and show a view of 'EAST BEACH, SALTCOATS'. The plaque at the bottom shows a view of the 'ESPLANADE SALTCOATS'. All three plaques have thistle decoration on each side of the photograph.

Originally a late medieval salt-producing and fish-curing village, Saltcoats was also known for coal mining and ship building. From the 1880s, however, until after World War II, it was one of the favourite holiday destinations for families from Glasgow and the rest of industrial central Scotland.
