Storage tin, with portrait of Queen Elizabeth II
Add to album

This storage tin was issued by 'Oxo Limited' as a commemorative souvenir to celebrate the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953.

The lid is decorated with a portrait of the Queen. In the streamer below is the text 'LONG MAY SHE REIGN'.

Oxo was a variation of the Liebig beef extract which was first formulated by the German scientist Baron Justus von Liebig in the 1840s. Oxo was registered as a trademark in 1899 in Europe and 1900 in the UK. As the original bottles of fluid extract were too expensive the penny 'cube' was introduced in 1910. It was an immediate success and remained at the cost of one penny until 1952. The first Oxo television advertisement appeared in 1955.
