Fancy box, made by French prisoners in Edinburgh Castle

During the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815), many French prisoners were taken to British gaols or prison ships. It was during this period that Edinburgh Castle reached its climax as a war prison. The majority of the prisoners were sailors but soldiers arrived later following Wellington's victories in Spain. Those prisoners who were skilled in crafts began to make articles which they were permitted to sell to visitors.
