This earthenware sugar bowl was made as a souvenir from Stonehaven by the Longpark Pottery in Torquay in Devon between around 1920 and 1957. It is an example of 'motto ware'.

The side of the bowl is inscribed, 'Frae Stonehaven/Help yersel tae sugar'.

'Motto ware' is believed to have originated in the late nineteenth century at the Aller Vale Pottery, between Torquay and Newton Abbot. The decisive role in its development, however, was played by the Brewer brothers who ran the Longpark Pottery outside Torquay. Their main 'bread and butter' products were small decorative earthenware items inscribed with sayings or mottos. These were made between around 1900 and the 1950s or early 1960s. For items destined for Scotland they used a 'Scots' dialect. Longpark Pottery closed in 1957.
