Box (detail)

This detail from a travelling box shows the paper label on the interior of the lid. The crowded label includes pictures of a powder flask, a belt or strap, trunks and a boar with a brush.

The inscription reads: 'MILITAR[Y TRAVELLIN]G TRUNKS / F[AN]CY AND COMMON BRUSHES OF EVERY K[IND] / [TRU]NK-STRAPS. CHAIN BELTS & COVERS./ PETER PEDDIE / TRUNK, BELLOWS, & BRUSH MANUF[ACTU]RER / At the sign of the Russian Boar No.7 Prin[ce's Street]'.

Several members of the Peddie family made leather goods and brushes at various Edinburgh addresses between 1784 and 1839.
