This armchair, from a set of eight dining chairs in an early 18th-century style, was made by the firm of Whytock & Reid in March 1929 for Hugh McTaggart of Hillwood. This chair cost £15 and 10 shillings.

Hugh McTaggart was the son of William McTaggart and the father of Sir William McTaggart, both distinguished artists. The Whytock & Reid partnership was founded in 1876.
