Spearhead

These bronze spearhead is one of two found at Murrayfield in Edinburgh. The hoard was buried between 950 and 750 BC.

The leaf-shaped spearhead has a pronounced midrib and lines outlining the edge of the blade. It has a rivet hole through the socket for pegging the spearhead to the wooden shaft.

The development of two piece moulds allowed the manufacture of socketed tools and weapons. Few moulds have been found, but workshops have rarely been excavated. Clay moulds were probably the most common, but since they can only be used once, they were discarded after casting.
