Bracelets, coin & textile (fragments)
Add to album

This lump of seven bracelet fragments, a coin fragment and textile remains is part of a hoard of hacksilver buried at Lews Castle at Stornoway on Lewis in the Outer Hebrides sometime between 990 and 1040.

These objects have not been cleaned. When found, the seven bracelet fragments were fused with the remains of a coin. Textile fragments are also preserved in the lump, showing that the hoard had been wrapped in cloth.

Textile remains rarely survive from this period, or were cleaned away before their significance was realised. Enough textile fragments survive from this lump and around other hacksilver in the hoard to show that the fabric was a linen tabby of medium quality.
