Printed page, from La Mode Illustreé

This page is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. The page accompanies a fashion plate for fancy dress outfits and gives detailed descriptions in English of the three outfits illustrated. It dates from 1874.

At the top of the page it states that, 'Any of these Designs may be procured of Miss RYAN, Paper Pattern Modeller, 24, Margaret Street, Regent Street, London. W.'

The sewing machine, patented in 1846, was by 1870 able to cope with extremely complicated dressmaking methods. For the not so very rich, it was possible to piece together gowns composed of fragments of different materials.
