Printed page, from La Mode Illustreé

This page is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. The page dates from 1873 and contains various advertisements, including ones for sewing machines and thread.

Various models of sewing machine are available from, 'WHIGHT & MANN, 143, HOLBORN BARS, LONDON E.C.' These include an 'EXCELSIOR FAMILY SEWING MACHINE' at six guineas and the 'ALBERTA' at five guineas.

The sewing machine, patented in 1846, was by 1870 able to cope with extremely complicated dressmaking methods. For the not so very rich, it was possible to piece together gowns composed of fragments of different materials.
