This page is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1872, the page gives English descriptions for fancy dress outfits which appeared in one issue of the magazine.

The first description is of an Arabian costume of silk, satin and tarlatane (a thin, stiff open-weave muslin). The next paragraph describes an ermine-trimmed satin and damask costume of 'Isabeau de Bavière'. The last description is of a little girl's peasant dress.

The 19th century fashion magazine contained many suggestions for fancy dress. The fancy dress ball was one of the occasions when women could be outwardly frivolous. Originating about the time of Waterloo, they were extremely popular.
