Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate illustrates a day dress and an evening dress and dates from 1870.

The dresses reflect the fashion of the time. By 1865, double skirts were worn with the upper one being looped up at the sides and bunched at the back. By 1868, the hooped cage or artificial crinoline, was becoming smaller.

La Mode Illustreé first appeared in 1860 and was one of the most important fashion magazines of the second half of the nineteenth century. It was published every Sunday and had a circulation of approximately 20,000.
