Fashion plate, from Le Monde Elégant

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is from Le Monde Elégant, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dated September, 1865, it illustrates two evening dresses and a mantle.

A mantle is a loose, sleeveless cloak or cape. The woman in the centre is wearing a blue example, decorated with tassels. The other two dresses reflect the current fashion for enormous skirts, supported by hooped cages or crinolines.

Le Monde Elégant first appeared in 1856 and remained in publication until 1882. One of its more notable fashion plate artists was Isabelle Desgrange (née Toudouze), the daughter of Adèle Anaïs Toudouze, another popular artist of the mid-nineteenth century.
