Fashion plate, from The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine
Add to album

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is from The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine, a ladies' magazine published in London. Dated December, 1831 it is signed, 'Bonnard'.

The plate illustrates women's wear - an outfit for outdoor day wear with a plumed hat and loose jacket and an evening dress with matching headdress. The two dresses reflect the current fashion for enormous skirts which were popular from 1860-70.

The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine was founded in 1852 by Samuel Beeton, husband of the famous Mrs Isabella Beeton who wrote the cookery book. It was in this publication that Isabella's recipes first appeared.
